Rockferry is an organic/biodynamic estate started in 2005 and owned by Tom and Fiona Hutchison, with vines planted in Marlborough and Central Otago. All grapes are hand harvested and hand sorted across a table, mixing the modern stainless steel tanks with the traditional Burgundian puncheons, French cuvees and French oak barriques for ageing. No expense spared winemaking- and it shows!
This is 100% Chardonnay, from their organic Corners Vineyard, hand harvested and whole bunch pressed. The free run juice was transferred to 70 % stainless steel and 30 % seasoned oak barrels for fermentation without settling. After a short warm fermentation the wine was left on full lees and underwent indigenous MLF in spring. The wine was then tirage bottled and matured for 2 years prior to disgorging.Complex, round, balanced. Underrated NZ fizz that would give the big Champagne houses a run.
