2018 Fedellos do Couto 'Cortezada' Mencia
Lord oh lord, what an exciting time to be a natural wine lover in New Zealand. This is the first time the wines of Fedellos do Couto have landed in NZ and we. are. Fizzing. This trio made up of Curro Barreño, Jesús Olivares and Luis Taboada farm 6 ha in the Ribera Sacra area of Galicia, Spain. Unbelievably step vineyards that are terraced on the cliffs of the river Sil, tricky to get to, and incredibly hard to farm. It’s impossible to use tractors or machinery, these vines are looked after entirely by hand, it’s one of the few regions that i’d go as far to say if you see Ribera Sacra on the label - buy it, it’s never let us down. This is from a plot of vines which were formally left to neglect, but the trio have brought them back to life and are producing a Mencia more toned down and elegant in style to some of their neighbours. Subtle, floral and refined. A little peppery with dark cherries on the nose, the palate is velvety and super juicy. We think this is drinking perfectly at the moment, but this will get better over the next few years. Only 8,000 bottles made.
